Anguilla loss is Reds gain - Redditch Advertiser
Redditch United 2, Workington 0
WHEN Damien Markman fired in Redditch's second goal deep in injury time it sparked wholesale celebrations in front of the Redditch dug-out. For not only did the goal finally see off a useful Workington, it also helped lift United within touching distance of that magical 40-point tally when talk of relegation can be forgotten. Liam Daly's penalty midway through the second half rarely looked enough against the Cumbrian visitors who had more than enough chances to claim at least a share of the spoils. Twice denied by the woodwork they continued to push and were unfortunate not to be awarded a late penalty before Markman's final flourish. Redditch manager Gary Whild included new signing Liam Murray in his back three pushing skipper Matty Clarke to the right side of a five-man midfield. And United's new-look defence was the busier in the opening half. With five minutes gone, Redditch keeper Danny Lewis did well to turn a Jonny Wright effort around the foot of the post before Tony Hopper lifted a shot onto the top of the crossbar on 19 minutes. Solid Workington defending kept the home side at bay for much of the half with Chris Murphy and Daly having half chances that were easily saved by keeper Adam Collin. The start of the second period failed to match the pace of the first but the urgency returned once United had taken the lead on 67 minutes. Danny Edwards, always a threat down the left, whipped in a cross that struck the outstretched arm of Workington defender Lee Andrews. Referee Alan Sheffield pointed to the spot and Daly duly sent the keeper the wrong way with his penalty kick. The visitors almost levelled 11 minutes from time but Wright hit the upright before the ball was cleared. Howard Forinton was again outstanding in the heart of the Redditch midfield and it was from his p*** that substitute Mark-man almost doubled the lead just five minutes after joining the fray only for his shot to fly wide of the Workington target. With a minute to go, the visitors appealed for a penalty when Michael Rees went down under the challenge of Exodus Geoghaghan but the shouts were ignored by the referee. And instead of being handed a gilt-edged chance to level the scores, Workington soon found themselves 2-0 down when a quick Redditch break down the left resulted in Edwards picking out the unmarked Markman who calmly steered the ball into the roof of the net.
