Anguilla’s Chief Minister refuses to resign, announces pay rise
The Chief Minister of
Anguilla, Osbourne Flemming, says he will not resign over a pay scandal for imported construction workers at a private resort. The workers’ pay was doubled and in some cases quadrupled after the workers, backed by Anguillans, protested.
In the meantime, Mr. Flemming has announced a 20 per cent pay increase for public servants and pensioners saying the island is experiencing unprecedented economic growth.
Speaking in the nationwide broadcast Wednesday night, Mr. Flemming said following the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States,
Anguilla experienced a serious recession.
He said the government now has a recurrent surplus of over US $14 million with $40 million in reserve.
However, the Chief Minister also noted that the increased economic activity had resulted in the nation having to import labour to meet the construction boom in the economy.
The economic success in
Anguilla is evident in an improved standard of living with a dramatic increase in the number of
new vehicles, homes and other personal ***ets.
