Antigua and Barbuda seek to rebound against St. Maarten
Antigua and Barbuda will be seeking to return to winning ways in the Leeward Islands Cricket ***ociation’s (LICA) senior three-day tournament today when they face host St. Maarten at the Carib Lumber Park in their fourth round encounter.
The Antiguans, who suffered their first ever loss against Anguilla – going under by 135 runs to their hosts in their third round encounter at Webster Park in The Valley last Saturday – will be hoping for an improved showing against St. Maarten. Antigua and Barbuda have made four changes to their squad which will also face St. Maarten in the LICA NAGICO One-Day Tournament match on Sunday. They are leg-spinner Lynton Africa, wicketkeeper/batsman Juari Edwards, batsman Kadeem Phillip and fast bowler Adam Sanford. Africa and Phillip will be hoping to make their debut in the LICA three-day competition. Africa, who plays for Scotia Bank Empire in domestic cricket, will replace leg-spinner Anthony “I Roots” Martin who has been suspended for today’s three-day match. Phillip, who played in Antigua and Barbuda’s opening NAGICO one-day match against Montserrat, will likely take the place of fellow Liberta batsman Michael Challenger, who has been dropped. Like Challenger, allrounder Morton Browne has also been dropped following disappointing performances in Antigua and Barbuda’s two previous rounds of matches. Captain Ian Tittle is also out of the side due to a hamstring injury, which will allow batsman Gavin Williams to again lead the side as he did in Antigua and Barbuda’s 98-run vicotory against Anguilla last Sunday. Sanford, who played in Antigua and Barbuda’s opening three-day match against Montserrat, is making a return to the side after missing the NAGICO one-dayer against Montserrat and the trip to Anguilla due to a calf injury. Antigua and Barbuda are currently in fourth place in the LICA three-day contest, but the defending champions are joint first in the NAGICO one-day competition. Two other fourth round matches in the LICA three-day tournament will bowl off today. Cup-holders St. Kitts will be at home against Anguilla, while the Combined Virgin Islands will host Nevis. The teams will clash in the NAGICO one-day competition on Sunday. Squad: Gavin Williams (Captain), Kadeem Phillip, Kelvin Bowens, Orlando Peters, Devon Thomas, Juari Edwards, Kerry Mentore, Justin Athanaze, Stephan Matthew, Adam Sanford, Lynton Africa, Larry Joseph, Javid Charles and Chad Hampson. Hayden Walsh (Coach); Earle Waldron (Manager). |
