Antigua in stunning win over St Lucia - Caribbean Cricket
The Stanford 20/20 Antigua and Barbuda Pro Team took top honours as they secured a stunning victory over host St Lucia to end the four way Stanford Pro Team tournament at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on Sunday evening. In the main event of the three day, six match tournament, Antigua batted first and found themselves in a hole at 73 for 9 but Larry Joseph and Mali Richards ensured they recovered to 127 all out in 20 overs with a 54 run last wicket partnership. Joseph hit 34 while Richards, son of legend Sir Vivian Richards, made 20. In form all rounder Wilden Cornwall hit 21 early in the innings.
Cornwall then returned with the ball to demolish the Stanford 20/20 St Lucia Pro Team with a five wicket haul as they were bundled out for 93, leaving Antigua with a comprehensive 34 run victory. Cornwall bagged five wickets for twelve runs from his four overs while big all rounder Curtis Roberts took two and Carl Simon and Chad Hampton one each. For St Lucia Johnson Charles, who had the highest score of the tournament (71* v Nevis) top scored with 19. Shervin and Mervin Charles made 13 each. The victory ensured that Antigua remained unbeaten in the preparatory games for the multi million dollar Stanford 20/20 Tournament. -+-+-+-+-+ In the earlier match, Nevis chalked up their first victory, beating Anguilla (who remained winless) by six wickets. Anguilla batted first and made 106 for 8 from their 20 overs. Terrance Adams made 29 while Junior Johnson added 25.Bowling for Nevis Kieran Powell grabbed 2 for 24. Nevis then cruised home with 107 for 4, West Indies Under 19 batsman Powell top scoring with 38. Kejel Tyson supported with 29 while Carlon Smithen hit 16. Kelbert Walters, Yannick Leonard and Chesney Hughes all pocketed a wicket each. The teams now return home to fine tune preparations before the colourful and exciting Stanford 20/20 Tournament kicks off on January 26th at the exquisite Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua. |
