Kittitian Cultural Stars go for Gold
Nine local cultural icons will vie for the winning titles in five regional competitions between July 23rd and August 11th, 2007.
Starting tonight, Melvin Hewlett, Craig Macdowell, Keva Morton, Yazid Francis and Ineachel Bagnall will compete in the first ever, 5-a-Side Pan Competition, in Antigua. This event has been added to the calendar of events for the islands’ 50th anniversary Carnival celebrations.
Other competitors slated to participate include: North Star Steel Orchestra from St. Lucia, Rhythmix Steel Orchestra from St. Vincent, a steel orchestra from Dominica and four bands from Antigua. Each group will have just five minutes to perform their pieces.
On Saturday 28th July, Violet Williams, who placed 1st runner-up in the 2006/07 National Carnival Queen Pageant will compete in the 11th Miss Ecstasy International 2007 to be held in Anguilla, as part of its pre-carnival events. Just next door in Antigua, the Regional Over 50 Calypso Competition will be brewing on the same evening. Representing St. Kitts will be the popular baritone, King Socrates.
Tesia Burton, National Carnival Queen 2006/07, will seek to better her fantastic performance at Miss Carival in St. Vincent and be crowned the 46th Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen 2007 on Friday August 3rd, in Antigua. Eight days later at the 11th annual Leeward Island Calypso Competition King Konris sets out to de-thrown Anguilla’s Lady Messenger, bringing the crown back to St. Kitts after two years.
“ St. Kitts stands a very good chance at winning these competitions, as we all know our representatives have proven themselves time and time again. We look forward to hearing good things at the end of each competition,” said Executive Director of the Festivals Secretariat, Allister Williams. He continued, “ all we ask is that they give their all to these competitions.”
