CHALFONT St Peter coach Lawrence Richardson has been appointed ***istant coach of World Cup minnows
Anguilla - and he has taken his son James and Beaconsfield Sycob footballer Roy Gumbs with him as he bids to plot the downfall of El Salvador next week.
The 47-year-old PE teacher thought it was a wind up when the Anguillans contacted him about the post - and he twice put the phone down on them before being persuaded it was true.
He said: "I thought someone was winding me up. Things like this just don't happen to people, do they?"
But after being persuded they were deadly serious, the Saints coach jumped at the chance of helping out the country where his parents were born.
He has taken with him eight-English-based players of Anguillian descent, including his own son, 18-year-old James, and Beaconsfield SYCOB striker Gumbs.
They flew to the Caribbean island on Saturday to begin their preparations for next Wednesday's match in El Salvador, which is expected to draw 50,000 fans.
The return leg will then be played in mainland America because the island of
Anguilla, which is only four miles wide, does not have a suitable ground to play the match on.
